Acupuncture
|
Like all
forms of Chinese healing traditions, acupuncture revolves around the concept of
maintaining balance and harmony within the body.
What can acupuncture treat?
Some of
the conditions that acupuncture can help are: chronic pain, weight loss, and
help to quit smoking. The list below represents just a few of the other
disorders or problems acupuncture can help with.
Ying and Yang
The root of many of the ideas within Chinese medicine lies in the concept of
Yin and Yang. These terms have been used in a somewhat technical sense for over
2000 years, having expanded beyond their original meanings of the shady and
sunny sides of a mountain, respectively. Yin and Yang are emblems of the
fundamental duality in the universe, a duality which is ultimately unified.

It must be remembered that Yin and Yang are complementary and not contradictory.
Nor is one regarded as “good,” and the other “bad.” Rather, a harmony is sought
between them and any imbalance avoided. Because, the Yin/Yang concept is all
pervasive in Chinese thought, it was naturally adopted by the founders of
Chinese medicine.
Chi or Qi
It is
thought that when chi (life energy) becomes stagnant and the flow is disrupted,
illness and disease result. In order to restore chi distribution, needles are
inserted into acupuncture points along the meridians (energetic pathways) of the
body. Due to the large number of potential acupuncture points, (there are in
excess of 350 acupoints on the meridians of the body) an acupuncturist carefully
selects the points to be used on the basis of physical and visual examination.
 |
From the
information gathered, the acupuncture points are determined and needles are
inserted. The size of the needles varies on the area of the body where they are
to be used. For example, longer, thicker needles are used in areas where there
is more "cushioning" such as the buttocks, while small, thin needles are used
where the flesh is thinner and closer to the bone. In either case, insertion of
the needles is quick and virtually painless.
In some
instances the needles are simply left in place, but more commonly, while
inserted, the needles are gently stimulated with electric pulses ( not like
getting shocked and hardly noticeable). This frees the blockage and restores chi
flow in the meridians, ultimately returning balance and healthy functioning to
body systems and organs.
